MUMBAI: Looking to strike form after last month's forgettable tour to the Far East, Aravind Bhat did few things right on court on Friday and suffered one of the worst losses of his career.
The defending champion committed a flurry of unforced errors to go down 19-21, 16-21 to Andhra qualifier K Tanishaq in the opening round of the Tata Open at CCI.
National champion Bhat, who hasn't played Tanishaq in the recent past, said he was very impatient in the 40-minute loss.
''I was very dull today. I knew he would be a tricky player and he played really well on the big points,'' the second seed said later.
Tanishaq, on the other hand, said he never thought he could win. ''I didn't have any gameplan today. I just wanted to be positive on court and it helped that Aravind gave me free points,'' said the 27-year-old Hyderabadi, who has upset the likes of Anup Sridhar in the past.
Later in the day, the bespectacled Tanishaq continued his winning run to advance to the quarterfinals with a 21-19, 21-19 win over Karnataka's Mohit Kamat. Top seed Chetan Anand also made the last eight, following a 21-15, 21-13 win over fellow Andhra player P Vinay Kumar Reddy.
In women's action, all the seeded players booked their quarterfinal berths.
